CTP EVOLUTION
With a rather broad brush, we cover major elements in the evolution of CTP
from its inception.
LASER AND PLATE TECHNOLOGY
The transition of imaging from film to plate has at its core the evolution
of laser technology. There are a variety of factors that influence the use of
laser technology in CTP equipment. These factors include laser type, power,
design, life, operating cost, and plate sensitivity. We address each of these
in separate sub-sections. We alsoaddress corresponding evolution in
plate technology.
VIOLET VERSUS THERMAL
We summarize the pros and cons of the two dominant technologies in
the market.
MEASURES OF PLATESETTER PRODUCTIVITY
In this section, we present an objective measurement of the productivity
of various platesetters on the market.
MANUFACTURERS’ PRODUCT OFFERINGS
This section attempts to provide insight into the evolution of product
development by the major players in the U.S. marketplace. This section in
particular should prove useful in clarifying the various and often confusing
product lines offered by platesetter manufacturers.

The most common kind of offset printing is derived from the photo offset process, which
involves using light-sensitive chemicals and photographic techniques to transfer images 
and type from original materials to printing plates. In current use, original materials may
be an actual photographic print and typeset text. However, it is more common—with the
prevalence of computers and digital images—that the source material exists only as data
in a digital publishing system.
Offset printing process consists of several parts:

* the inking system (ink fountain and ink rollers);
* the dampening system (water fountain and water rollers);
* the plate cylinder;
* the offset cylinder (or blanket cylinder);
* the impression cylinder.

In this type of printing, the printing areas are in recess – that is, on a lower level than
the non-printing surface. The recesses are filled with ink and surplus ink is removed from the
non-printing surface by doctor blade. The substrate is then pressed against the printing
cylinder to transfer the ink onto it – see Figure. The main examples of gravure printing are
Rotogravure printing and, in the area of arts and crafts, copper plate engraving and diestamping
(also security printing).
Gravure is the process which uses the intaglio principle. The shortest ink train is
found in the gravure process as the gravure cylinder actually revolves in a bath of ink. The
doctor blade removes excess ink, but leaves ink in the thousands of engraved cells in the
copper cylinder.

The principle on which a flexographic printing unit works is illustrated in figure-1. The
low-viscosity ink is transferred to the printing plate via an anilox roller that is evenly screened
with cells, the so-called screen roller/anilox roller (screen width 200–600 lines/cm, ceramic or
hardchromed metal surface). The rubber or plastic plate is attached to the printing plate
cylinder. Ink is transferred to the printing substrate by the pressure of the impression
cylinder. The use of a blade (together with the ink supply system) on the screen roller has a
stabilizing effect on the printing process resulting from even filling of the cells on the screen
roller.

The process of producing film by extruding molten resin into a continuous tube is,
at first glance, extremely simple. The elements of the process (Figure 1) include
the resin pellets which are fed through a hopper into an extruder. Here,
heat and friction convert the pellets to a melt which is forced through an annular
or ring-shaped die to form a tube. The tube is inflated to increase its
diameter and decrease the film gauge. At the same time, the tube is drawn away
from the die, also to decrease its gauge. The tube, also called a “bubble,” is then
flattened by collapsing frames and drawn through nip rolls and over idler rolls to a
winder which produces the finished rolls of film.
